News reading 14- The Central Park 5 Jogger case is about five young boys ages 14 to 16 that were wrongly accused of attempted murder and rape of Trisha Meili. The five boys faced between 7 and 13 years in prison. The DNA on Trisha when examined didn't match any of the five boys DNA but they were still charged and arrested. The case was brought up again in 2002 when the actual rapist confessed to the rape and attempted murder of Trisha. Matias Reyes is facing a lifetime in prison and had actually raped a few other victims that summer. His DNA matched a similar case that had happened a few days before Trisha Meili was raped and almost killed. Four of the five boys were paid by the state a sum of $7.1 million and the other boy was paid $12.2 million for the wrongful conviction. Farstien was the woman that put the boys in jail wrongfully. She still doesn't admit to doing anything wrong and was no longer part of the chief of DA's sex crimes after 2002. I personally don't understand how someone can put five boys in prison and know that none of their DNA matched the DNA on the woman that was raped and still go to jail. The system is broken and pretty much always has been. There was no actual evidence to convict these boys but they were. I don't understand how they possibly could have even been seen as the rapists considering there wasn't even more than one person's DNA on Trisha Meili. Meili wasn't able to step up and defend the five boys because when found she was brutally beaten and doctors were even surprised if she'd ever wake from the coma again. When freed from prison, 3 of the 5 boys sued because of racial discrimination and emotional distress. I'm beyond confused on how there was no material evidence to convict them but they still ended up in prison anyways. It was so far past wrong and it enrages me to think about how broken the system is to let that slide by. It's scary to know that you won't have any material evidence against you in a case and still can end up in prison for something you don't do. I really feel as though something should be done about that.
